Software
Getting Started with the Browser Toolbar
The LearningLine Browser Toolbar installs along with the Word Processor. When you open your browser after installing the LearningLine software you will see the browser toolbar (LLine Bar in the image below).
If you don't see the LLine Bar, here's how to turn the toolbar on.
- Click View - Toolbars - LLine Toolbar (see image below)
- If you have trouble seeing the toolbar, make sure your toolbars are not locked under View, Toolbars, Lock Toolbars.

Using the Dictionary
To display the definition for a word on screen, highlight the word for which you want to see and hear a definition, then click the dictionary icon in the toolbar. This will open the dictionary window and display the definitions for the selected word. Note that you can't highlight multiple words on a page and have their definitions display; the dictionary can only display definitions for one word at a time.
Using the Text-to-Speech Feature
There are three buttons for controlling how text is read back to the user: the speak button, the stop button and the pause/play button.
- Speak selected text: Highlighting a section of text and then clicking the speak button will read just the selected text.
- Stopping the reading: Clicking the stop button will end the reading of the selected text. If you want to have more text read, begin again. Select the text you want read and then click the speak button.
- Pausing and playing text: The pause and play buttons work like the pause and play buttons on a VCR. Click the pause button to pause what is being read, then click the play button to pick up the reading from the point where you clicked pause.

Options Window
Clicking the word Options (next to the hammer in the toolbar), displays the text-to-speech options window (see image below), where you can select a voice for having text read back to you from a list of voices installed on your computer. You can also adjust the read-back speed of the voice using this window.
When you first open the Option Window (see figure above), you may see only one voice listed, Microsoft Sam. If you would like to have a choice of voices, two others are available free at the Microsoft Web site. In order to install the voices on your computer, you must download two programs: Microsoft Reader and Reader Text-to-Speech.
To download Microsoft Reader, go to the following URL and follow the directions on the screen:
http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/pc.asp.
(Note: You do not need to activate the software unless you want to use the reader for eBooks. Activation allows you to read copy-protected eBooks, which are not part of this course. However, you must download the Reader in order to use the two optional voices.)
To download Text-to-Speech, go to this URL and follow the directions on the screen:
http://www.microsoft.com/reader/developers/downloads/tts.asp. This download contains the two voices Michael and Michelle.
